5 reasons not to skip yoga class

We all have the best of intentions, and it isn't always possible to 'live our best lives'. We stumble, we fall, we go on.

Yoga class can sometimes be one of those good intentions where we stumble - there are always obstacles that can get in the way - you get stuck in traffic from work, money is tight this month, it's your best friend's birthday drinks.

However, there are lots of times when it's possible to make more of an effort, and cut out those excuses - whether it's hitting the snooze button one too many times, or having that second glass of wine rather than getting off the sofa, it's so easy to slide into skipping.

I am a firm believer that you always benefit from attending, even if you aren't in it 100%, so here are 5 reasons that I think are pretty convincing reasons not to skip out on class.

1. Making use of your time

It's a very rare week day evening when you look up from the tv or the ironing and can account for where that last hour went. Even though it can seem like a hassle to get to class - before you know it, that hour has evaporated, and all you did was make your bum dent in the couch a little more defined.

2. Making serious progress

Yoga is a journey, and it is a practice. Showing up to one yoga class every 3 months isn't doing anyone any good - showing up twice a week? That's where you're able to access some serious improvement, in your mind, as well as in your body. That down dog isn't going to shake its own asana.

3. Developing healthy habits

Feeling good about how you spent time has a huge effect on your morale and your satisfaction with your life. When you spend your leisure time in ways that make your body feel good, and relax your mind, you are much better equipped to cope with every day stress and anxiety - and in turn, to make better decisions about the rest of your life, whether it's dietary choices or work.

4. Being part of a community

We are really social creatures, and spending time with others who share your interests is not only stimulating for your brain, but also helps you to build better support networks to call on.

5. Use it or lose it

Most yoga teachers aren't earning the mega bucks - and while this is a choice that each teacher has made, because they care deeply about the practice, we've all gotta eat. If enough people continually fail to show up for class, there's a good chance that class won't be around for much longer.

While these are a few amazing reasons to attend regular classes - the most important is to value the things that make you feel good. When was the last time you regretted going to yoga class? I bet it's easier to name the last time you regretted skipping...

Some food for thought the next time you consider hitting snooze!
